2017 All Star Breakfast Honors Former Lakers Coach and Pistons Player for Character and Leadership
This year's All Star Breakfast, hosted for the 12th year by Athletes in Action and the NBA Retired Players Association, will celebrate character, leadership and faith. Honoring the accomplishments of two men integral to the sport, the breakfast will kick off the All Star weekend with positivity and an emphasis on character both on and off the court.
On Saturday, Feb. 18, Randy Pfund will receive the Jerry Colangelo Award, and Mike James will receive the Bobby Jones Award. Both men were top-notch players in college and continued to find their strengths as a coach and player, respectively, with the NBA.
The 2017 Jerry Colangelo Award honors Pfund for his character and leadership in basketball and beyond. Pfund was an All-American player at Wheaton College (Illinois) and continued his career with basketball as an assistant and then head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers. Later, following his former head coach, Pat Riley, Pfund headed to the Miami Heat, where he served as the general manager for 13 years. Pfund served as a guide to his teams both in the sport and in life.
The All Star Breakfast will also present former Detroit Pistons player James with the 2017 Bobby Jones Award. James was a first team All-Atlantic player while at Duquesne University and then moved on to the NBA as a point guard for various teams throughout his career, during which he helped the Detroit Pistons win an NBA title in 2004. He was a leader with his teammates both as a player and a person.
